When we started Flash in Jamaica, the idea was simple. People here should be able to send and receive money without asking permission from a financial system that was never built with them in mind. We've come a long way since then. What began as a way to move money across one island grew into a way to move it across the Caribbean, and now it reaches the rest of the world.
This release is the biggest step we've taken yet, and it really comes down to two things.
The first is that you can now get paid from anywhere. When you set up your account, Flash gives you your own US or EUR account details. A real account number and routing information, right there in the app. You share them the way you'd share any bank account, and people can pay you. Overseas clients, employers, family sending money home, it all just works. No US address, no bank branch, no minimum balance, no paperwork that takes weeks. For a lot of people in our part of the world, getting paid by someone abroad has always been the hardest part. Now it's the easy part.
The second is that once the money is yours, you decide what happens to it. Cash out to a US, EUR, or local bank account. Send it to another Flash user, instantly and for free. Move it over Lightning or on-chain Bitcoin. Spend it anywhere Bitcoin is accepted. It's one balance, and the choice is always yours.
All of this runs on Bitcoin and the Lightning Network. That's what makes it fast, and cheap, and borderless. But you never have to think about any of that to use Flash. You don't have to buy Bitcoin, or hold it, or understand how it works. We take care of the hard parts. And if you do want to hold some Bitcoin yourself one day, it's right there when you're ready.
There's something in this release for builders, too. Flash now has enhanced API key access, so developers can create scoped, rate-limited keys and put payments and wallets right into their own apps. It all lives in a new developer console at console.flashapp.me, with the full documentation at docs.flashapp.me.
And the reach keeps growing. Flash is now available in more than 200 countries and territories, and yes, that includes the United States. What started on a single island now reaches most of the world.
We built Flash in the Caribbean, and we're proud of that. What's new is that the same rails now connect a freelancer in Kingston to a client in London, and a shop in Montego Bay to a customer on the other side of the world. Money should move as freely as the people who earn it. That's what we're building.
